Cummins manufacturer the world’s broadest range of generators from 0.6 kVA to nearly 30,000 kVA with over 100 years experience in the electrical power generation industry.

At their location in Stamford, Lincolnshire they had a material handling issue that was creating some concern. A core process at the site involves carrying out a number of ‘finishing’ operations to each individual generator. This was achieved by placing the generator on specially adapted fixed height benches with an operator free to work around the unit. However, unless the operator was of average height there was the potential that they could suffer from a Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), Upper Limb Disorder (ULD) and/or musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).

Cummins decided to take the progressive step of replacing all the fixed height work benches with scissor lift tables that would allow the operator to determine and adjust to the safest & most comfortable height to work with. Varghese Abraham (Manufacturing Engineer) and H & S Manager Ray Ferry, said that Advanced Handling were selected as the supplier for the lift tables as they had visited site, understood exactly the requirements but most importantly provided an extremely cost effective solution. Additionally, Varghese added, “We knew that Advanced Handling are a very capable organisation as they have, on previous occasions, supplied a variety of materials handling equipment and have given an on-site after sales support service second-to-none”.
